Find out how to manage who can view your Community’s content and its visibility on the wider internet.
You want to keep your Community safe and make sure that you're in control of who joins your Community. The good news is that you have a whole host of configurable settings available to you, so let's go through them.
Start by heading to your Console and navigate to the Privacy & Security tab in the Configure section. There's a range of options available here, which are all disabled by default.
Invite Only:
Enabling this setting ensures that members cannot organically sign up to your Community. Instead, members can only register to your Community through an invitation you send them to their email.
You can learn more about this feature here, however please do remember that enabling or disabling this feature will:
- Instantly show and be enabled/disabled for the Web Platform.
- Will require a new iOS/Android App version to be built and submitted for review before any changes are available on the App.
Web Registration Enabled:
Enabling this feature removes the ability for members to register new accounts via the web platform, ensuring that members can only register new accounts via your iOS and Android Apps.
Be mindful of how this may impact and change your potential customer journey.
Disable Sharing:
Your content is important and valuable to you, and sometimes you don't want any of it to be shared outside of your Community.
Enabling this feature means that members cannot share any Posts outside of your Community.
Search Engine Optimization (SEO):
Toggling this switch on will enable your Community to be searchable through search engines (such as Google and Bing) and fundamentally crawl able by these search engines.
At this Current moment in time this will apply to your log in/sign up page and Posts made in your Community. We are planning on increasing the amount of pages that are searchable in the near future.
If you'd like to learn more about this then please open this article here.
Email Confirmation:
When this is enabled, a member will instantly receive an email from us to verify their email account before they can access the core functionality of your Community.
Emails will be delivered from outbound@disciplemail.com and might land in a members junk inbox, so if they do reach out to you please ask them to search for email from this address.
Enable CAPTCHA as a Part of Email Confirmation:
This feature is only available when the email confirmation feature is enabled. It adds a CAPTCHA to the email confirmation itself, stopping automated systems from bypassing your email confirmation requirements.
Signup Protection:
Enabling this feature will limit and stop high volume signups by setting a limit on how many signup attempts are allowed in a set time period.
Whilst this is a useful feature to protect your Community from bots and spam accounts, be mindful that this could also impact genuine user signups too, especially if it's during a big marketing drive or your initial launch.
Suspicious Signup Protection:
Enabling this feature will allow us to detect signups from suspicious connections to help prevent fake account registrations. Once you toggle this to on, you'll have the following three options:
- Report: will flag a newly signed up account to you in your Console in the moderation section (which you can learn more about here). This will not limit the member account in any way, but will flag it to you, allowing you to ignore it or take any necessary action.
- Ban and Report: will allow the account to register, but will not log them in to the Community.
- Block: as you can imagine, will stop the user from attempting to register a new account entirely.
It's important to be aware that this feature cannot distinguish between who is and isn't using certain connections for legitimate reasons. For example, a genuine user using a VPN or a managed network may run foul of this feature, even if they are using a network deemed as suspicious.
