It's normal and natural that throughout your Communities life, you will encounter members who want to delete their account. Let's go through how they do this.
There are multiple reasons a member may wish to delete their account, however more often than not, it's because they no longer want their information stored in a platform they are not participating in anymore.
It's important for you to be able to clearly guide your users to how they can delete their account and information whenever they ask for this. So let's dive in!
Deleting an Account via the Web Platform:
The member will need the following two pieces of information for the account they wish to delete:
- Their password.
- Their email address (the one tied to their member account).
You can provide them with the following link https://thecollective.disciplemedia.com/profile/settings/delete-account.
Please note you will have to change the Community shortname to match your Community, as the link above is an example for The Collective.
Alternatively, the member can navigate to the deletion section of the platform by Logging In and going to Settings, then Delete Account at the bottom of the page.
Once the user has logged in with their credentials, they are presented with the option to:
- Delete all content: this will remove all Posts and the account.
- Anonymise all content: this means that all public Posts will remain, but show from an anonymised account. The account itself and all personal details are still deleted.
Having selected the option, checks the confirmation box confirming their understanding that and reconfirming their request to delete their account and they then press the now active Delete my account button.
Deleting an Account via the App:
The member will need the following two pieces of information for the account they wish to delete:
- Their password.
- Their email address (the one tied to their member account).
The member will have to navigate to the deletion section of the platform by Logging In and navigating to their profile by tapping the profile icon in the middle of the bottom menu, and then heading to the settings page by selecting the cog wheel icon in the top right corner.
At the bottom of the page, is the option to Delete Account.
Pressing delete account, will take a user to two confirmation requirements before their account is deleted to make sure this cannot be done in error. The first confirmation requirement, provides the user the option to:
- Delete all content: this will remove all Posts and the account.
- Anonymise all content: this means that all public Posts will remain, but show from an anonymised account. The account itself and all personal details are still deleted.
- Cancel: this will cancel the deletion process and the user can return to the platform as usual.
If a user selects either delete all content or anonymise all content, they will then be presented with the final confirmation question:
- Delete account: this permanently deletes the account.
- Keep account: this will cancel the deletion process.
With either process (via the Web or the App), the user is offered the same level of control and options, and any deletion is permanent.
